Baltimore, MD (Sports Network) - Troy Smith completed 16-of-27 passes for 171 yards with one touchdown, and the Baltimore Ravens survived a late surge to down the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-21, in a water-logged contest that closed the 2007 regular season for both clubs.
Charlie Batch completed 16-of-31 passes for 218 yards, with two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Steelers (10-6), who rested quarterback Ben Roethlisberger and wide receiver Hines Ward. Pittsburgh's loss secured the No. 3 seed for the San Diego Chargers. The Steelers now face a tougher playoff road, having to host 11-5 Jacksonville next Saturday at 8 p.m. (et).
Derrick Mason had six catches for 72 yards for the Ravens (5-11), who finally stemmed their franchise-record nine-game losing streak. Musa Smith gained 83 yards with one touchdown on 22 carries, and Cory Ross had 12 carries for 72 yards and a score for Baltimore. David Pittman had two interceptions for the Ravens.
The Steelers ground game suffered from the absence of Willie Parker, who broke his leg last Thursday against the Rams, ending his season. Najeh Davenport gained only 27 yards on 12 carries with a score for Pittsburgh. Santonio Holmes had four catches for 98 yards and a score, and Nate Washington gained 68 yards on five catches for the Steelers.
Trailing by 20 in the fourth quarter, the Steelers made things interesting. Holmes cut the deficit to 13 points on his 59-yard scoring reception with 7:13 remaining. Pittsburgh then went with an onsides kick, which caught the Ravens off guard, and Washington recovered the ball at the Steelers 44.
Cedrick Wilson's seven-yard touchdown catch on a 4th-and-2 pulled Pittsburgh within six points with 3:36 left in regulation.
The Ravens ran the next two minutes off the clock, but the Steelers did get the ball back at their own 11 with 1:36 left. They made it to their own 30, where Batch badly overthrew Holmes on a deep pattern, and Pittman hauled in his second interception of the game to ice the win.
The Steelers spotted the Ravens seven quick points, as Willie Reid fumbled the opening kickoff, giving Baltimore the ball at the Pittsburgh 35. Eight plays later the Ravens were in the end zone, thanks to a two-yard plunge by Smith, and Baltimore led 7-0 with 10:08 remaining in the first.
Matt Stover kicked a 28-yard field goal to give Baltimore a 10-0 lead with 1:48 to play in the quarter.
A shanked, 25-yard punt by Daniel Sepulveda gave Baltimore possession at their own 48 to start the second quarter, and Ross capitalized. After a six-yard gain by Smith, Ross gashed the Steelers for 14, and then 32 yards, the latter for a touchdown that put Pittsburgh in a 17-0 hole with 13:27 left in the second quarter.
Batch tried to go deep for Washington on the next Steelers drive, and Corey Ivy dragged the wideout down for a 47-yard pass interference, putting Pittsburgh at the Baltimore two. Davenport needed three carries to finally break the plane, a one-yard scoring run that cut the deficit to 17-7 with 10:07 left in the first half.
Pittman leapt in front of Washington and picked off a Batch pass late in the second quarter, and returned it 30 yards before fumbling. The Ravens recovered, though, and took over at the Pittsburgh 38, setting up a 31-yard Stover field goal with 17 seconds left in the half, giving Baltimore a 20-7 lead.
Smith hit Mason for gains of 11 and 14 yards during an eight-play scoring drive in the third quarter. Devard Darling capped the 5:25 scoring march with a 15-yard touchdown catch, putting the Ravens up 27-7 with 3:41 left in the quarter.
